The iron ring is a simple ring (stainless steel these days, although the University of Toronto still offers a ring made of iron to its engineering graduates) obtained in a ceremony around the time of graduation. The iron ring is worn on the working hand, and is supposed to be a reminder of our constant obligation to society. Like the iron, it reminds us that the consequences of our actions are cold and unforgiving.
